Most tip pool arguments start with the same question: why did the bar get that much? When the split lives in a manager's head or a scribbled sheet at the end of a Friday close, nobody can check it, and a role that feels shorted stops trusting the pool. Running the numbers in the open, with the same rule every shift, removes most of that friction before it starts.

This calculator uses the weighted hours method, which is the most common way US restaurants combine hours worked with role-based points. Servers are the reference role at 1 point per hour. You set how many points per hour bartenders and support staff earn relative to a server, enter each group's total hours and the pool total, and the tool computes one payout rate per weighted hour. Each group's share is simply its weighted hours times that rate. Set both weights to 1 for a pure hours-only split.

How to use this tool

Enter the total tips that went into the pool for the shift, day or week you are splitting.
Add up hours for each role group and set the points per hour for bartenders and support staff relative to servers.
Read the payout per weighted hour and each group's share, then multiply a person's hours by their role points and that rate to get their individual amount.

What the math assumes

Servers are the reference role at 1 point per hour; bartender and support points are multipliers relative to a server hour.
Every hour within a role earns the same points; the math does not weight a rush hour differently from a slow one.
The pool total is what actually gets distributed, so any card processing deductions or tip-outs paid before pooling should already be removed from it.
Shares are shown per role group, not per person; divide a group's share by each person's weighted hours to get individual payouts.
Rounding to cents happens only at display time, so the three shares add back to the pool total within a cent or two.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get each person's payout from the group share?

Multiply the person's hours by their role's points per hour, then by the payout per weighted hour shown at the top. For a busser who worked 6 hours at 0.5 points, that is 3 weighted hours times the rate.

What if we split purely by hours with no role points?

Set both bartender and support points to 1. Every hour then earns the same amount and the tool becomes a straight hours-based split.

Can managers or owners be included in the pool?

Under federal rules, managers and supervisors generally may not keep tips from a pool, and some states go further. This calculator only does the arithmetic; check the rules that apply to you before deciding who is in the pool.

Should tips be pooled per shift or per week?

Either works with this tool. Per shift is easier for staff to check against their own night; per week smooths out slow shifts. Pick one, write it down and apply it the same way every time.
