Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

If you pay tipped staff a reduced cash wage and count tips toward the rest, you are taking a tip credit, and the credit only works when tips actually fill the gap. On a slow week, a server on a few short shifts can come up short, and the employer owes the difference. Missing that top-up is one of the most common wage findings in restaurants, and it is easy to miss when payroll runs on autopilot.

This calculator does the same check a payroll auditor would do for one employee and one workweek. It multiplies the applicable minimum wage by hours to get what the employee must receive in total, compares that with the cash wage paid plus tips kept, and reports the shortfall the employer has to add. It also shows tips per hour against the maximum tip credit per hour so you can see how close to the line a week was. Defaults are the federal figures; enter your state or city rates if they are higher, because those are the ones that apply.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the cash wage you pay per hour and the minimum wage that applies at your location.
  2. Enter the employee's hours and the tips they kept for one workweek from your POS or tip records.
  3. If the top-up owed is above zero, add that amount to the employee's pay for the week and keep the calculation with your payroll records.

What the math assumes

  • Defaults use the federal figures of a $2.13 cash wage and a $7.25 minimum wage; if your state or city sets higher numbers, those control and you should enter them.
  • The check covers the single workweek you enter, which is how the federal rule measures the tip credit; it does not average across pay periods or months.
  • Hours are treated as straight time; overtime premiums and the way the tip credit interacts with overtime are not calculated here.
  • Tips entered should be what the employee actually keeps after mandatory tip-outs or pool contributions, since only kept tips count toward the credit.
  • This is an arithmetic check, not legal advice; some states do not allow a tip credit at all, and their rules override these defaults.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the tool check one workweek instead of the whole pay period?

Under the federal rule the tip credit is measured per workweek, so a strong week cannot cover a weak one. If you run biweekly payroll, check each of the two weeks separately.

Does the employer keep any part of the tips if the employee earns well above minimum wage?

No. Tips belong to the employee. The tip credit only lets you count some tips toward the minimum wage; it never lets the business keep them.

What if my state does not allow a tip credit?

Set the cash wage equal to the minimum wage. The maximum tip credit becomes zero and the tool will show no shortfall, since tips sit fully on top of the full wage.

Do service charges count as tips here?

Generally no. Mandatory service charges are treated as business revenue, not tips, unless the business passes them to staff as wages. Enter only the gratuities the employee kept.
